We went on a business trip to the South of China in winter. There we visited Guilin, in Guangxi province, where some of our factories are located. At this place we met one of our most important customers, who was also interested in seeing the production process of our items.
Our products can be roughly divided into wooden, metal, and plastic hangers, as well as padded hangers, velvet hangers, and other groups and sub-categories. Thus, we visited the factories specialized in the production of wooden, metal and plastic hangers.
Our stay in Guilin took from Friday till Sunday, and during these days we used well our time visiting as many factories as possible.
As soon as we got to Guilin, we were received by Manager Luo, who is in charge of one of our main factories. Accompanied us during the whole journey and took care that we didn’t lack anything during these days. As a foreigner, her performance showed me a good example of Chinese hospitality.
After lunch, we picked up our customer and went directly from his place to the first factory, which is specialized in wooden hangers. The skill and the speed of the workers was a proof of their years of experience in the business. For somebody who has not personally seen the production of clothes hangers, it was really interesting to see this in first person.
First, we saw the raw materials, and then the shaping, assembly and sanding processes. Unfortunately, since this day was the International Women’s Day, some workers were not at the factory and hence we couldn’t see some stages of the production process. Nevertheless, the experience was good as a first approach.
After visiting the factory itself, the Director, who received us in person, invited us to see their sample room, where we could see many of the works they have accomplished so far. Some of the items were quite original and all had been done with extreme care.
After a talk with the Director, it was already late in the evening, so it was time to have dinner and rest for the following day.
The visits followed the next day. Early in the morning we picked up the customer and went together with him to one of our most important and biggest factories. This factory is specialized in wooden hangers, but also produces specific metal hangers. The dimensions of this factory were significantly bigger than the ones of the factory we saw the day before.
Since it was a normal day, we could see the complete production process, from the shaping, assembling, sanding, painting, to the addition of the hook. In this factory I got a clear and systematic explanation of the whole production process. I had heard from the different stages separately, but after this explanation I was really thankful, since I finally understood the whole context.
As it appears, the production process counts on the next stages
1) Cutting
2) Thorough sanding
3) First painting
4) Sanding to remove spots
5) Second painting
6) Consequent sanding to remove remaining spots
7) Optional third painting
8) Optional consequent sanding
9) Mounting of the hook
Obviously, some hangers will require additional stages depending on whether they include specific fittings or pieces, such as the anti-slip band on the shoulders.
This factory was the most representative as for the wooden hangers, since it was there where we saw the most detailed example and where we saw more processes.
After visiting this factory, it was time for lunch and for recovering strengths for the next visit.
In the afternoon we focused on another type of hanger, and so we went to visit the plastic hanger factory. In this case, the process is much more automated, since the form of the hangers themselves is developed by the injection molding machine. Our customer is an expert in this type of hangers, and for this reason we didn’t need to explain much about the process. He placed special attention on the pieces themselves and the quality and features of the same.
As a newbie in this industry, but somebody who has already heard of injection molding and even worked with manuals of injection molding machines, I was very happy when they explained to me — next to the machine itself — how it works and how the hanger is produced. In general terms, I was enjoying myself by personally seeing the working process of the machines and the experienced professionals dealing with them. I even took the chance to speak with the employees and ask them the purpose of the operation they were carrying out. With no doubt, it was an enriching experience.
Same as on the first factory, we went to see the sample room afterwards. In this case, the sample room included all types of plastic hangers. We normally see these hangers more frequently than the wooden ones, since they are cheaper and can therefore be found more frequently. The specific requirements of the customers always determine the result of the work. Thus, we could see from simple to more complex hangers, and also special models of hangers.
Plastic hangers are normally regarded as cheap and, many times, as worthless items. However, the samples of this factory were a proof that this material also offers the possibility to create authentic art pieces.
After visiting the plastic hanger factory, there was still some time left to visit the factory of Manager Luo, which specializes in the production of all metal fittings, such as hooks, bars, clips, and other metal fittings.
We hadn’t visited any other metal fittings factory, and this one let us see the remaining type of hangers we hadn’t seen yet. It was very interesting to see how the clips are made, namely by cutting the shape of its two parts from a metal band through a machine. Also, how the metal parts are subjected to a bath to improve their properties and for the painting.
Personally, I was fascinated by the process, and I was learning something new all the time. As for the special customer who visited us, it was a profitable trip, since he could see himself how the pieces are produced and check the quality of the items.
At this point, our customer left, since he had to take a flight the next morning, and we had dinner after the long day.
The remaining part of the time was dedicated
to meeting our Manager’s partners and talking about the business since the last
time they met each other.
In general, it was a great experience that let us understand more the business and opened our view for the daily development of our work.
